Education has become a battleground in American life. The passions aroused by issues such as free speech, critical race theory, and state intervention in university governance can cause us to overlook the fundamental question that shapes the entire academic enterprise: What is education?
Should education aim to promote economic success, remedy historical injustice, advance science, foster religious formation, or inform civil debate? Should it cultivate reason, instill habits of virtue, initiate the young into a community, or help them order their loves and longings?
Join AEI’s second annual conference on the future of the American university, where experts will offer arguments about the nature of education from early childhood to the PhD level, helping us understand the work of universities within the comprehensive educational enterprise.
